Health checks for immigrants

Immigrants have the right to a free health check. This means people who have moved to Finland for whatever reason. (If you are an asylum seeker, the reception centre will arrange your health check.)

The health check will be done at a social and health centre, maternity and child health clinic, or student and occupational health service in your local wellbeing services area.

During the check, a nurse will ask you about:

  • any past illnesses
  • any current symptoms
  • vaccinations you have received
  • whether you may have been exposed to any diseases
  • any infections
  • any medicines you take
  • anything else affecting your health.

The check includes a lung X-ray and laboratory tests. More tests can be done later if needed.

The nurse will also decide whether you need to see a doctor or a dental hygienist. You can also get help if you have some urgent problem. You have the right to health services in your own language.
